Teatro di Marcello in Rome, enhanced editorial view of the ancient theater and archaeological remains

About This Experience

A Different Story of the Eternal City

Beyond the grand monuments of imperial and papal Rome lies a city shaped by the lives of its communities. This private walk follows the ancient streets around the Teatro di Marcello, the historic Jewish Ghetto and the River Tiber before moving into Trastevere. Together, these neighborhoods reveal how Roman identity has been formed through religion, trade, architecture, hardship and resilience across the centuries.

Ancient Monuments and a Living Community

At Teatro di Marcello we explore the striking remains of an ancient Roman theater and the medieval and later buildings layered above it. Nearby, the Portico d'Ottavia recalls the monumental fabric of the old city, while the surrounding streets lead into one of Europe's most historically significant Jewish neighborhoods. Your guide approaches the area's history with respect, discussing everyday traditions alongside the establishment of the ghetto in the sixteenth century and the tragic events of the twentieth century. The neighborhood is not an open-air museum: it remains a place of living culture and worship.

Across the River to Trastevere

Depending on the group's pace, we cross near Tiber Island and continue into Trastevere's cobbled lanes, intimate piazzas and characteristic streets. Along the way we talk about bridges, river trade, churches and the fascinating relationship between central Rome and the communities on the Tiber's western bank. The atmosphere changes with the time of day, making this an especially evocative walk in the morning or late afternoon.

Personalize the Walk

The standard experience is an approximately three-hour guided walk. It does not automatically include synagogue or museum entry, which must be arranged according to access and opening rules. Interested in Roman-Jewish cuisine, local bakeries or a casual food stop? We can shape a food-focused version and quote tastings separately. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Private Walking Tour Price

The private walking tour costs €290 for a group of up to four guests. For groups of five or more, add €40 for each additional guest, starting with the fifth person. The itinerary is private and can be adapted to your interests and pace. Admission to ticketed sites, if requested, is quoted separately unless explicitly included in your confirmation.
